Neuroradiology

The Division of Neuroradiology is composed of 14 talented faculty with a variety of areas of special expertise.

Advanced neuroimaging techniques are routinely utilized by the Division including functional MRI, MR perfusion, MR spectroscopy, diffusion tensor imaging, time-resolved MR angiography, CT angiography, and CT perfusion. The Subdivision of Head and Neck Imaging has expanded under the directorship of Dr. Patricia Hudgins, including a busy image-guided head and neck biopsy service. Specialized faculty support Pediatric Neuroradiology based at the Egleston and Hughes Spalding locations of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The Grady Memorial Hospital system has provided extensive experience with imaging of stroke and head trauma. More recent endeavors include development of fetal MRI and interventional MRI services. State-of-the-art imaging equipment is present at all sites to support our clinical service. Multiple collaborative efforts for research are in place with various clinical services as well as basic researchers.

Our education focus encompasses 7 to 8 ACGME accredited diagnostic neuroradiology fellows per year. A series of well-designed rotations at the multiple clinical sites provides tremendous experience in all aspects of diagnostic neuroradiology including advanced MRI applications, head and neck imaging, pediatric neuroradiology, neuroangiography, and image guided procedures. The Division of Neuroradiology is a vital constituent of numerous interdisciplinary clinical management and educational conferences with Neurology, Neuro-ophthalmology, Neuro-oncology, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology, and Orthopedics.

Highlights and Accomplishments

AUR GE Radiology Research Academic Fellowship Award

Falgun Chokshi, MD
Falgun H. Chokshi, MD, MS has been awarded the prestigious AUR GE Radiology Research Academic Fellowship award (GERRAF) for 2015-2017. This mentored award will enable Dr. Chokshi to pursue a career in radiology outcomes, comparative effectiveness research, and health services research. Under the mentorship of Richard Duszak, MD and Jerry G. Jarvik, MD, MPH (University of Washington), Dr. Chokshi will work on his grant project titled, “The Value of Vertebral Augmentation for Treatment of Spinal Fractures in Multiple Myeloma Related Bone Disease: A Population Based Study Using the SEER-Medicare Linked Database.

Assistant Program Director of Diagnostic Radiology Residency
Kristin Baugnon, MD
Dr. Kristin Baugnon has been appointed as our new Assistant Program Director of Diagnostic Radiology Residency, joining the leadership team led by Dr. Mark Mullins. She will be actively involved in resident education issues, residency curriculum, ACGME core competencies and the day-to-day activities of the residency. We would also like to thank Dr. Deb Baumgarten ’s leadership during her term as Associate Program Director of Diagnostic Radiology Residency.

Physician Leadership Development Program
Falgun Chokshi, MD
Dr. Falgun Chokshi recently graduated from the first class of the Physician Leadership Development Program. Over the last 10 months, 25 physician participants have taken part in monthly sessions focused on developing their knowledge of leadership, finance, organizational development, strategy, marketing, and operations, as well as gaining a deeper understanding of the Emory organizational landscape.

Gold Medal Award
Pat Hudgins, MD

The American Society of Head and Neck Radiology (ASHNR) Gold Medal Award Committee, chaired by Dr. C. Douglas Phillips, has selected Dr. Patricia Hudgins as this year’s Gold Medal Award recipient.

Hudgins has consistently extended herself beyond self-interest to make contributions that have benefited the field of neuroradiology. The Gold Medal is intended to foster the highest standards of the ASHNR, recognizing exceptional service and achievement. The Medal is awarded on the basis of both professional and personal excellence, honoring individuals who are superb neuroradiologists, scientists, and/or physicians, and who also are truly outstanding people. In her acceptance speech at the award ceremony, Hudgins emphasized her clinical service and “putting the patient first” as her proudest accomplishments.

Best Paper Award
Chad Holder, MD

Dr. Holder was awarded the Best Paper award at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Neuroradiological Society (SENRS), for his lecture titled “Pseudoprogression in Glioblastoma – Clinical and Imaging Features”. Each year, the best papers from each of the three component societies of the American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) are presented in a joint session at the annual meeting of the ASNR.
Holder was also elected Vice President of the Southeastern Neuroradiological Society (SENRS) at the 37th Annual Meeting of the SENRS.
