Letter from Chair

Welcome to the Emory Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences! Our Department has enjoyed a long-standing tradition of outstanding clinical programs, a passion for teaching, strength in innovative imaging research, and a focus on quality. We are fortunate to benefit from substantial strength in human talent, a collaborative environment, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Guided by our 2007-2012 strategic plan, we have invested in our faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and professional development; implemented a robust quality and safety infrastructure; grown our research in imaging sciences; and established a philanthropic culture of giving back. Our Radiology Leadership Academy and Service Excellence Institute arose from this plan. During this period we also grew in NIH funding ranking from 31st to 15th nationally.

The launch of our 2013-2017 strategic plan builds on this foundation to focus on the value of imaging in a changing national academic healthcare environment. The main themes of this plan are: 1) Building on our service excellence culture, 2) Optimizing the patient experience, 3) Developing an integrated model for radiology informatics, 4) Creating strategic internal and external partnerships, 5) Optimizing the distribution of resources, and 6) Promoting standardization.

Emory has enjoyed a long-standing tradition of excellence in clinical programs, a passion for teaching, and strength in innovative imaging research. Yet this is a time of unprecedented growth in all of our three missions, and integration with the Emory Woodruff Health Science Center initiatives in predictive health, neuroscience, transplantation, heart and vascular disease, and cancer.

Located in the vibrant metropolitan city of Atlanta, Emory University has many regional advantages including its close proximity to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Cancer Society, and Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Notably, Emory and Georgia Tech share many programs including a top-ranked joint Department of Bioengineering and a nanomedicine initiative. At 1000-foot elevation, the residents of Atlanta enjoy a wonderful climate.

Vision

Emory Radiology will lead excellence in imaging sciences, education, and care delivery.

Mission

The Emory Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences serves the community through advanced innovation, translational research and clinical application of imaging sciences. The department is committed to excellence in scholarship and to the training of the next generation of radiologists, technologists, and imaging scientists. The department's goal is to provide the highest quality patient care with predictive, diagnostic and therapeutic imaging-based approaches.

Clinical

Our clinical divisions focus on delivering the highest level of subspecialty care and include Abdominal Imaging, Neuroradiology, Neurointerventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Emergency Radiology, the Breast Imaging Center, Interventional Radiology & Image Guided Medicine, Cardiothoracic Radiology, and Pediatric Imaging. Our Division of Community Radiology Specialists offers outstanding radiology services at inpatient and outpatient settings outside of the primary Emory facilities. The Emergency Radiology Division provides 24/7 imaging services to our patients. Our clinical care delivery is highly aligned with our Departmental emphasis and the Emory Healthcare Program on Quality.

Research

In the research arena, Emory Radiology maintains investigative divisions that emphasize basic and translational work in Radiopharmaceutical Discovery, Physics and Computing, Medical Physics Imaging, Quantitative Imaging, Nuclear Cardiology R&D, MR Research, and Radioligand and Expert System. The new Emory Center for Systems Imaging (CSI) is an interdisciplinary and multimodal research facility focused on biomarker development and advanced imaging for neuroscience, oncology, and cardiac applications.

Education

Our teaching programs include over 60 diagnostic radiology residents, 6 nuclear medicine residents, over 25 fellows, and active participation in medical student teaching. Our Adopt-a-Resident Program supports the career development of our residents in unique mentored projects. Our Allied Health Program in Medical Imaging provides innovative training for future radiology technologists. A new medical school building supports simulation laboratories and enhanced incorporation of imaging into medical student education.
